Tips to Keep in Mind During the Braces Process

Posted .

Has Dr. DoBin Choi suggested that you have braces placed? Are you a little nervous about the braces process, or simply wondering what to expect? We are thrilled to go over the basic orthodontic treatment process with you.

Braces Placement
The brackets of braces are bonded to your teeth using a special dental cement by our orthodontist. Minimal discomfort when braces are placed is normal. For the first few days, eat softer foods to help you adjust to chewing. Yogurt, soup and macaroni and cheese are great choices.

After Application
It takes a little bit of time to adjust to the teeth realigning. The pressure of the wires may cause some discomfort at first. Over-the-counter pain medication can provide some relief. You can also place orthodontic wax on the brackets to prevent them from rubbing against the inside of your cheeks and lips. We will tell you how to use orthodontist wax during your braces application visit.

Orthodontic Appointments
Braces adjustment appointments are arranged as our orthodontist sees fit. These appointments are needed so that the braces can continue to move the teeth towards their ideal positions. Our orthodontist may adjust the archwires and change the elastic ligatures.

Dealing With Discomfort
Any discomfort that may come with braces is manageable. In many cases, the discomfort occurs after braces application or adjustment. Taking over-the-counter medication can relieve soreness. You can also rinse your mouth with salt water to lessen discomfort.
